Emphasis is directed toward an understanding of the rationale for using performance and instructional technology, a review of the various roles performed by instructional designers and human performance specialists, and a description of the methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs. Includes use of the Internet in classroom/workshop instruction and as a stand-alone instructional delivery system. Web-based learning is investigated in both educaitonal and training contexts. Designed to give students experience using authoring systems, languages and utilities for the design, development, production and integration of Web-based technology into educational settings. Tools will include various commercial and consortium authoring tools, such as the Macromedia Studio. |

Gives graduate students an opportunity to investigate, discuss and apply systematic approaches to instruction. Special emphasis is given to that element of the instructional system, which allows for the integration of instructional media into the process. |

| CI 553: Instructional Development [SP] |
Intended for media specialists and instructional developers, this course applies current research and technology to the solution of instructional problems. The student is guided through the systematic process of indentifying instrucitonal problems, specifying objectives, analyzing tasks and learners, organizing resources, specifying methods and media and assessing outcomes. The role of the instructional developer as a helping professional will also be examined. Prerequisite: 504 |

This course prepares instructional designers to communicate with text, pictures and graphics. Emphasis is on mastery of visualization principles for perception, memory, concept learning, problem solving, motivation, and attitude change; a review and critique of research on instructional message design is also part of the course content. |

This seminar is designed to provide participants with skills in using several different task and content analysis techniques–those techniques used to make explicit the components of complex human performances and knowledges. The course emphasizes the evaluation of individual learner performance as well as program evaluation in the interest of assessing curricular effectiveness. Criterion-referenced evaluation is presented in contrast to norm-referenced evaluation. Data collection and analysis strategies for both qualitative and quantitative data are included. Attention is also given to the preparation of evaluation reports. |
