Christian Sebastian Loh, Ph.D.
Dr. Loh was a recipient of the military-funded Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) award for 2009. His main research agenda is about “performance assessment with virtual environments.” He currently serves as Associate Editor of International Journal of Gaming and Computer-Mediated Simulations (IJGCMS), and is one of two coordinators for the Collaboratory for Interactive Learning Research (CILR) at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). He has published widely in refereed journals and written book chapters on assessment of serious games, and the impact of serious games on instruction. He was the Divisional President of the Multimedia Production Division (MPD) of Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) from 2008-2009.
Having worked in both the business and public education sectors, Dr. Loh is fully aware of the intricate play between the two industries. He believes that video game technology is too powerful a tool to be left to the devices of those who put profits above social good. His advice to the industry and colleagues is “First, do no harm!” He believes that leaders in the field of serious games should conduct their research and business in a socially responsible manner.
His main research interests are:
- Embedded assessment in digital games,
- Game modding for serious play using commercial-off-the-shelves (COTS) games, and
- Content management system design and delivery.
