Why Another Modding Tutorial?

NeverWinter Pedia is an Online Guide to Modding Neverwinter Nights 2 for educators and their students who are interested in learning to mod NWN/NWN2 for learning and for fun. There are a number of well written tutorials for the NWN2 toolset, and those are certainly good resources to learn to NWN2 modding. (In fact, that's exactly how I started doing NWN2 Mods.)

But when you have to teach a course or workshop about NWN2 Modding, it is difficult to refer to all these tutorials because they each cover a little section, and some tutorials are better written for one task than the other. Tutorials that are available only in PDFs also post additional problems due to frequent changes and updates found whenever a new game patch is released.

I ran an average of one to two Education Technology Workshops on Making Video Games (using the NWN toolkit) per year. So obvioudly, these little problems make it doubly hard for my students. (See Course Flyers.) I also realized I need a more centralized approach to teaching the course. Hence, the Neverwinter Pedia.

Serious Games Competitions

If you think you can tell some good stories, and are interested in seeing your game mod put to good use, you may want to try submitting your mods to these serious games competitions.

Serious Games Showcase & Challenge

2008 has become the third year I am teaching this course. In 2007, I discovered the serious game competition, Serious Game Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) jointly hosted by Autodesk and the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC).

The competition lists the everwinter Nights as an approved toolkit for the making of serious games for the competition. We submitted a mod named Saving Adryanee in the 2007 competition, and our mod made it to the finals as Finalist!

Player Meeting Adryanee for the first time.

Now modding NWN became much more meaningful.

International Student Media Festival (ISMF)

The ISMF is open to all students (all the way to college). It is hosted by the ECT Foundation, and is typically held in conjunction with the annual conference for the AECT.
