Persistent Worlds

You need to remember that NWN was created before 2002, so you can not compare the technology with that of today's Massive Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG): like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, the Advanced Dungeon & Dragons Online, and the Lord of the Ring Online.

Even the persistent world feature was a hack of the original game by Papillon. Papillon created a program called NWNX (NWN Extender) to enable him to better run his persistent world: Blackdagger, the World of Avlis.

Characteristics of Persistent World (PW)

  1. On-going (24/7) – a PW is on-going. Plots and events happen as time passes independent of the players.
  2. Do not allow saving – there is no PAUSE key and no SAVE GAME option for PW. Since the PW continues to run (events happens as time passes), player can not actual save a game, which sort of put the game on "hold."
  3. Actions in the PW has real consequences (e.g. there is no RELOAD if player dies). However, player progress will be saved.
  4. Most PWs made use of a Server Vault system, and require player to create a Play Character on the PW server when they first join the PW. This prevents players from using "souped up" characters from the get go. Servers that allow players to import their local characters used a Local Vault system. Some PWs may even include an application process (players must email Server Master with an intent to join the game world).
  5. A PW may consist of many areas spread across several servers. Players are "shuttled" from one server to another via Portals.
  6. Several servers may be joined together to create one game world. Although this approach gave the illusion of a bigger game world to the players, it is quite different from the single big world approach adopted by today's MMOGs.
