Official Campaign files are named with .NWM extension, and are found in the special Game Directory\nwm\ folder.
Any new or downloaded .MOD files should be stored in: Game Directory\modules\. This ensures the integrity of the OC files. As an extra precaution, the Aurora Toolset will refuse to open any .NWM file.
However, should you really want to "peek into" the .NWM files and learn how Bioware developers made the Official Campaign, you can copy the NWM files into the "modules" folder, and then rename the .NWM extension as .MOD.
Guess what? The .NWM files are, afterall, just a .MOD file. You should not have any problem opening them with the Aurora Toolset now.
In NWN2, there are two directories for game modules may be found:
Game Directory\modules\. This directory contains the official game (modules). [Note: You should leave the main game directory alone, and not add any files to it.] My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\modules\. You should use this directory as the "HOME" directory for all non-official mods (including those you create, and those you downloaded. Note: You can find other modders/players created mods from mod community such as the NWVault, and the soon-to-be available "NWN2 Module Exchange" by Atari.
